6-12 Months before the Wedding

  • Determine the kind of wedding you will have, what traditions you want to follow, and of course the date and time.
  • Plan the budget, and who is responsible for what costs.
  • Do you want to hire a wedding coordinator?
  • Is the location and officiating person available?
  • Reserve the wedding and reception locations.
  • Select your the bridal party attire.
  • Choose the bridesmaids, groomsmen, ushers, and other honored roles.
  • Send announcements of your engagement to your fiance's and your local and hometown newspapers.
  • Meet with the florist, photographer, caterer, videographer, and entertainment to discuss budgets and options.
  • Discuss the guest list with fiance's and families.
  • Contact a rental coordinator for rental reservations.
  • Discuss honeymoon and reservations. (Traditionally the groom makes all the honeymoon arrangements.)
  • Arrange for time off work, if necessary.
  • Buy a wedding planner and envelopes to store brochures and notes.
  • Develop record-keeping system for invitations, gifts, and thank-you notes.
  • Some couples will open a checking account just to track funds more easily.

4-6 Months before the Wedding

  • Select and register wedding gifts and patterns.
  • Select color scheme for wedding.
  • Order dress and accessories.
  • Order bridesmaids' dresses, shoes and accessories.
  • Research men's formal wear specialist for men's attire.
  • Remind parents to plan their wardrobe.
  • Order invitations, announcements, programs, napkins, matchbooks, and personal stationery.

2 Months before the Wedding

  • Plan reception music.
  • Choose and order wedding bands and engraving.
  • Order wedding and groom's cakes.
  • Check state/county marriage license requirements.
  • Plan ceremony, reception, menus, master of ceremonies, music, and timetables.
  • Plan rehearsal dinner, and bridesmaids' luncheon.
  • Complete guest list and address invitations.
  • Make arrangements for lodging for out-of-town guests.
  • Purchase gifts for attendants and groom.
  • Plan reception seating, if necessary.

1 Week before the Wedding

  • Explain any special reception seating arrangements to head usher and banquette manager.
  • Purchase traveler's checks and confirm that charge cards have sufficient credit limit for the wedding.
  • Pack.
  • Remind best man, maid of honor and ushers of the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner details. Present gifts to attendants at rehearsal dinner.
  • Arrange for rental returns and any reception hall clean-up.
  • Confirm dates and times with vendors such as photographer.

3 Days

  • Make sure the best man and maid of honor have emergency phone numbers such as the photographer, tux shop and cake.
  • Call vendors and do a final verification.
