This checklist is designed to help the groom with the wedding planning.

6 Months before the Wedding

  • Select your best man and groomsmen. Decide how many ushers you need. The general rule is one usher for every 50 guests.
  • Start making your guest list.
  • Arrange visits with minister to discuss ceremony and any marriage preparation classes or weekends you will need to attend.
  • Discuss the wedding budget with the fiancee and parents.
  • Discuss honeymoon plans. Does your honeymoon involve travel? If so, check on passports, visas, and any required vaccinations.

3 Months before the wedding

  • Work with your fiancee' and parents to combine and edit guest list.
  • Visit wedding gift registry with fiancee.
  • Finalize wedding attire.
  • Finalize transportation for wedding party to ceremony and reception. Limos may be scarce should your wedding fall around Proms or Holidays.
  • Complete honeymoon plans: buy tickets, arrange hotel, etc.
  • Finalize wedding rings.
  • Confirm bride's bouquet(s) and all other corsages and boutonnieres.
  • Does your state require any medical tests?

6-8 Weeks

  • Finalize rehearsal dinner plans with your parents.
  • Work with fiancee and parents to arrange lodging for wedding attendees.
  • Select gifts for wedding party and anyone helping with the wedding. Many of these are given at the rehearsal dinner or bachelors party.
  • Choose a wedding present for your bride.
  • Make sure necessary legal documents such as insurance, financial, medical, and religious - are in order.

2 Weeks

  • Give or attend bachelor party.
  • Pick up wedding rings, check engraving.
  • Make a date with your fiancee to get the marriage license.
  • Double check honeymoon reservations and hotels.

1 Week

  • Explain any special reception seating arrangements to head usher and banquette manager.
  • Put the clergy member's or judge's fee in a sealed envelope and give it to the best man, to be delivered after the ceremony.
  • Purchase traveler's checks and confirm that charge cards have sufficient credit limit for the wedding.
  • Pack.
  • Remind best man and ushers of the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner details. Present gifts to attendants at rehearsal dinner.
  • Arrange for rental returns and any reception hall clean-up.
  • Confirm dates and times with vendors such as photographer.

3 Days

  • Pick up tuxes. Confirm the sizes and take inventory.
  • Make sure the best man and maid of honor have emergency phone numbers such as the photographer.
  • Call vendors and do a final verification.
